Spring Gardening

Can you believe it? January is rapidly drawing to a close. It seems early, but now and then in early February an unexpected warm, dry day suddenly appears and the gardener in us begins screaming to get out. What is he or she yelling about? The three P’s…Pruning! Planning! Planting! Now is the time to prune the orchard; it is never too early to start planning the garden; and depending upon the flower or crop, the need for planting starts now and continues until weather puts a stop to it. Grafting can also be done by those interested in adventure.

Your library has a wealth of materials full of ideas and projects for the garden…flowers, vegetables, garden art…you name it, we have it! If you need a computer to access gardening websites, we have it. Use one of our computers or bring your own laptop. You can access WiFi during open hours inside the library or 24 hours a day from our parking lots.

A couple places to start researching orchard management and gardening on the internet are at The West Side Gardener and Grow Organic Apples Holistic Network. Books that can help with pruning, planning and planting are How to Prune: An Illustrated Guide to Easy Pruning For Every Plant and Every Season by John Cushnie; Tips for container gardening: 300 great ideas for growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs by the editors and contributors of Fine Gardening; and The grafter's handbook by R.J. Garner.

Readers are encouraged to contribute gardening tips and ideas to this blog. Does anyone have some effective organic tips or good website links with ideas for controlling pests in the home orchard? We welcome your comments.
